Research Project Summary

Year Funded: 2016 Budget: Funding Agency: IRSST
Title: Multiplication of bicycle delivery services and health and safety issues of working cyclists: developing good practices
Category: Occupational Disease, Injury and Health Services
Subcategory: Occupational Injury
Keywords: bicycle courier industry, health, safety risks
Link to research website: http://www.irsst.qc.ca

Issue:

The activities of the bicycle courier industry carry significant health and safety risks. These risks are relatively undocumented, despite the multiplication of delivery services using cyclists. Moving, food delivery and even fast food services have joined ranks with traditional bicycle courier sercvices.

Objectives:

The purpose of this research is to document the increase in delivery practice and bicycle trades and existing forms of work organization. The researchers will also document the road risks associated with delivery and cases of accidents and near misses, and define the factors in play.
This research will be funded under a call for proposals launched by the IRSST in 2015 on the prevention of work-related traffic accidents.

Anticipated Results:

This information should be useful for identifying potential prevention measures as well as good practices for improving the safety of working cyclists.
