WorkSafeNB: New program to provide immediate help to workers recovering from psychological injury

WorkSafeNB is pleased to announce a new program to improve care and support for workers with a traumatic psychological injury (TPI). Starting today, the SUCCEED program will provide immediate treatment to workers with a diagnosed TPI applying for workers’ compensation benefits, even before their application is adjudicated.

Work-related TPIs can result from experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event in the workplace. For example: a correctional officer witnesses a violent attack by inmates, or a first-responder arrives at a troubling scene. TPIs include anxiety disorder, acute stress reactions and post-traumatic stress disorder.

“A TPI can be emotionally and physically devastating, affecting a person’s ability to function at home, in the community and in the workplace,” said Tim Petersen, acting president and CEO. “It affects the worker, their families, co-workers, the employer and many others.”

The six-week, or six-session, SUCCEED program provides the tools and skills to help workers start their recovery. It gives them access to immediate help to create a strong foundation for recovery, preparing them for in-depth trauma work, if required.

“The need for support to these workers is great in New Brunswick,” Petersen said. “WorkSafeNB is taking a lead by providing this immediate treatment, using evidence-based practices by qualified treatment providers across the province. Help through SUCCEED is available in person or virtually.”

WorkSafeNB is committed to supporting workers’ return to work as quickly as safely is possible. Medical evidence proves that recovering at work is better for most workers. It helps workers stay active, speeds healing and provides a sense of purpose. SUCCEED is an important offering to advance this effort.

In recent years, WorkSafeNB has seen significant increase in the number psychological injuries in the workplace and lengthy duration off work for these injuries. TPIs can be difficult to treat, differing dramatically from the traditional treatment of physical injuries and this is why this program is so critical.

Workers with a TPI who apply for workers’ compensation benefits will be automatically referred to SUCCEED. When a claim application is accepted, further treatment will be determined.

WorkSafeNB has also developed an online TPI Resource Centre with FAQs and tips for workers and employers and health care providers supporting a worker with a TPI.

“We’re pleased to take one more step in providing exemplary care and support to injured workers, helping them through the recovery process and preventing unnecessary disability,” Petersen said.
