WorkSafeNB appoints new president and CEO

Tim Petersen has been appointed the new president and chief executive officer of WorkSafeNB.

On behalf of WorkSafeNB’s board of directors, Mel Norton, chairperson, announced today that Tim Petersen has been appointed the new president and chief executive officer of WorkSafeNB. Petersen has served as acting president and chief executive officer since October 2021.

“We trust in Tim’s ability to lead WorkSafeNB through this exciting time of modernization and are confident the organization will thrive under his direction. Serving as acting president, Tim has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the role, defined by great passion and considerable knowledge gained from close to 30 years service with WorkSafeNB,” Norton said.

“Since taking on the role of acting president, Tim has proven his competence and earned the board’s confidence. He’s demonstrated a people-first leadership style and effected substantial progress on key projects such as WorkSafeNB’s modernization roadmap, new strategic plan, legislative amendments and reviews, and a new investment model,” Norton said.

“With his deep expertise in every facet of our work – from prevention, compliance, and stakeholder relations to claims management, worker recovery, and financial operations –  we believe we could not have chosen a better candidate.”

The board of directors is responsible for appointing the president and CEO, with approval from the Lieutenant-Governor in Council. It is a five-year term appointment.

His vision, leadership and expertise will guide WorkSafeNB during this transformative period as it continues to effect change and enhance the services it provides to our province’s workers and employers,” said Trevor Holder, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Labour. “His extensive experience at WorkSafeNB, including eight years in executive leadership roles, demonstrates his ability to lead teams and work collaboratively with diverse groups of stakeholders, skills we believe are vital for the CEO position. He is deserving of the faith both WorkSafeNB staff and its board have entrusted in him, a faith I share myself,” Holder said.

I dedicate my undivided attention to making New Brunswick the safest place to work, with a steadfast focus on People. Prevention. Integrity,” Petersen said.

A native New Brunswicker, Petersen earned his bachelor of business administration from the University of New Brunswick in 1990, and holds the professional designations of Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant, Certified Information Systems Auditor and Certified Internal Auditor.

Since joining WorkSafeNB in 1995, in addition ot his most recent role as acting president, Petersen has served as vice-president of Prevention Services, vice-president of Corporate Services, controller and manager of Internal Audit.

He currently serves as governor, Council of Governors, Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety; on the advisory committee of the Conference Board of Canada’s Council for Safe Workplaces; and is a board member of the Association of Workers Compensation Boards of Canada.
