The National Day of Mourning, marked annually on April 28, is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives, or suffered injury or illness at work.

“Every year on April 28, we remember all those who have lost their lives on the job and we make a commitment to doing everything we can to prevent workplace injuries from happening in the future. Now, more than ever, each of us needs to know how to recognize health and safety risks and to fully understand our rights and responsibilities when it comes to making workplaces safer,” said Hon. George Hickes, Minister Responsible for the Workers’ Safety & Compensation Commission (WSCC) in Nunavut.

“For the Northern Territories Federation of Labour and the workers we represent, April 28th, the Day of Mourning is a very personal moment we mourn together. Today, we grieve together. We also need to make a commitment to each other – a commitment to workplace safety and accountability.  Not just today, but every day,” said Nicole Tews, Northern Territories Federation of Labour (NTFL).

Please join us wherever you are by holding a minute of silence on April 28th.  Recognize the National Day of Mourning in your workplace or sharing your support on social media using the hashtag #DayOfMourning.
