Issue:

The Canadian Workplace Exposure Database (CWED) is being created as part of CAREX Canada, with the goal to collect workplace exposure data from government agencies, researchers, and other sources. This data will be used to create a large database containing past and present exposure data from across Canada and will allow users to generate information about which occupations come into contact with workplace carcinogens, where exposure happens, and at what levels exposure is thought to be occurring. So far, this information has been collected from various public agencies; however, there is a large amount of data from other public agencies stored in paper files or individual electronic reports which needs to be added. This project will support the transfer of additional data from B.C. and Saskatchewan.

Objectives:

The objective of this project is to generate information about occupational exposure to carcinogens in Canada and provide the agencies that supplied the data with the ability to more quickly access and use their data. This information will be shared with workers, companies, researchers and other government agencies.

Anticipated Results:

These exposure estimates will be used to support cancer prevention activities across the country by identifying high risk groups, setting priorities for prevention, assessing the impacts of cancer control regulations, and predicting future cases of disease. These estimates will be useful to a variety of end-users in the areas of primary prevention, exposure and disease surveillance.
