We are pleased to share the results of our latest public consultation regarding a change to legislation that would include correctional officers in the definition of emergency response workers under the Workers’ Compensation Act.
With this change, a correctional officer’s confirmed diagnosis for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) would be presumed to be work related unless the contrary is shown.

We are immensely grateful to the hundreds of individuals who participated in our public consultation, sharing their valuable feedback and personal experiences on a topic that clearly holds deep meaning for them. The wealth of insights we’ve received from this group of contributors has been truly remarkable and has greatly enriched our understanding of this important subject.
In light of the significant support received during the consultation, WorkSafeNB’s Board of Directors is recommending government make this legislative change, aligning New Brunswick with most jurisdictions in Canada. Almost all PTSD claims for correctional officers in the last five years have been accepted and cost increases, if any, are not expected to be material.
