St. John’s, NL – On April 28 each year, WorkplaceNL marks the National Day of Mourning by remembering workers who lost their lives, were injured or experienced illness due to their work.Last year in Newfoundland and Labrador, 15 people lost their lives due to their work – 14 from occupational disease and one from a fatal incident. In the past five years, 124 workers lost their lives.

On April 28, we encourage workplaces and residents to pause for a moment of silence to show your support and renew your commitment to workplace safety. You can also share a post on social media and include #DayofMourning.

“On the National Day of Mourning, we remember the workers who lost their lives due to a workplace incident, injury or illness,” said the Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister Responsible for WorkplaceNL. “Gone but never forgotten, we honour them today and everyday as we continue to work together with our partners towards enhancing the safety of our work environments. I offer my deepest condolences to the loved ones they have left behind.”

“We remember workers who lost their lives or have suffered life-altering illness, we also honour their family, friends and co-workers who feel immeasurable grief,” said Ann Martin, CEO, WorkplaceNL. “The impacts of work-related tragedies are devastating on many. On National Day of Mourning, we renew our commitment to help workplaces prevent injury, illness and death.”
