St. John’s, NL – Every year on April 28, WorkplaceNL remembers those who lost their lives, were injured or experienced illness due to their work for the National Day of Mourning.
Last year in Newfoundland and Labrador, 30 people lost their lives due to their work – eight from fatal accidents and 22 from occupational disease. Over the past five years, WorkplaceNL accepted 145 claims for work-related deaths.
On April 28, we encourage workplaces and residents across the province to pause for a moment of silence to show your support and commitment to safe workplaces. You can also share a post on social media using the hashtag #DayofMourning.

“Today we take a moment to remember those who have lost their lives while on the job, “said the Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister Responsible for WorkplaceNL. “We continue to work to ensure that all workers in our province have the proper protections, legislation, and regulations to help prevent workplace incidents.”
“Losing a family member, friend or co-worker is devastating,” said Ann Martin, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, WorkplaceNL. “For every tragedy, countless loved ones are left behind. On the National Day of Mourning, we collectively renew our commitments to improve health and safety in the workplace and prevent further injuries, illnesses and deaths.”
