The Workers Compensation Board (WCB) of Prince Edward Island is launching a six-week awareness campaign to highlight the importance of hearing protection in the workplace. Running from March 24 to May 2, 2025, the campaign focuses on educating employers, workers and even loved ones about the risks of noise-induced hearing loss and how to prevent it.

Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent, but it is also 100% preventable. The campaign emphasizes that hearing protection is readily accessible and effective, reinforcing the message with the tagline: “Your hearing matters. Don’t wait until it’s too late.”

“In PEI, employers are responsible for taking every reasonable precaution to protect the work-related health and safety of workers,” said Danny Miller, the WCB’s Director of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). “This includes making sure workers are protected from excessive noise exposure. Work-related hearing loss is irreversible, but with the right precautions, it’s completely preventable. This campaign is about raising awareness and encouraging employers, workers and even loved ones to take action before it’s too late.”

The WCB’s OHS Officers have already been visiting workplaces since March 3 to share hearing protection materials like posters, guides and encouraging employers and workers to attend upcoming hearing protection workshops on March 25 and 26. On March 24, the general awareness campaign begins with digital and social media ads, traditional radio and audio streaming spots, and educational workshops on developing effective hearing conservation programs. A third workshop on developing hearing conservation programs will be held as part of the WCB’s annual Workplace Health and Safety Conference, on May 6.

The WCB also offers a free online certificate course called “Hearing Conservation Programs.” The course is intended to help Island employers and workers understand the requirements and benefits of establishing a hearing conservation program whenever workers are exposed to excessive workplace noise.
