Manitoba students awarded for showing the importance of safe work

March 26, 2024 (Winnipeg) – SAFE Work Manitoba, a division of the Workers Compensation Board, has announced the winners of its annual Norm the Safety Contest. The annual contest invites high-school students across the province to use creativity to show young Manitobans how to “Make Safety the Norm”.“Once again Manitoba’s students impressed us with their creativity and knowledge of safe work practices with this year’s submissions,” said Dave Kramer, Vice President, SAFE Work Manitoba. “We congratulate all winning students and thank them for their commitment to teaching their peers about safety in the workplace.”

For placing first in their category, four students from Sisler High School will share a prize of $2,500 for their video Distractions: How to Prevent Hand and Finger Injuries. Another Sisler student is taking home $2,500 for her first-place winning poster. Students from Sturgeon Heights Collegiate, Swan Valley Regional Secondary School and École Secondaire Neelin High School also placed in this year’s contest. The students will receive cash prizes along with their schools.

This is the third year in a row that students from Sisler are taking home the top prize in the Norm contest. They are assigned the contest as a project for the CREATE program, an entertainment arts training program located at the school.

“We’re honoured to have our students’ video work recognized by SAFE Work Manitoba, said Jon Dyck-Lyons, CREATE Teacher, Sisler High School.

“Storytelling is at the heart of what we teach, and spreading awareness about safety in the workplace is best done through story – the events and emotions that impact us all, as audiences and employees.”
