Set against the coastal charm of St. Andrews, New Brunswick, the 2025 AWCBC Governance Summit brought together 77 delegates from workers' compensation boards across Canada for a powerful and inspiring experience. Hosted by WorkSafeNB in partnership with the Association of Worker’s Compensation Boards of Canada (AWCBC), the summit featured a dynamic program filled with thought-provoking speakers, valuable networking opportunities, and memorable social events.

Under the theme "Beacon of Governance: Collaborating for Leadership Success," the summit highlighted the critical role that boards of directors play in guiding their organizations toward strong leadership and effective governance. Attendees explored the challenges faced by workers' compensation jurisdictions in a rapidly evolving landscape and discussed ways to promote collaboration within their organizations.

The leadership-focused sessions, combined with an engaging social program set against the stunning backdrop of St. Andrews by the Sea, created an empowering atmosphere for all participants. The Algonquin Resort, with its historic architecture and breathtaking ocean views, provided a perfect setting for both learning and connection.  Michael Bach set the stage with a framework for inclusive leadership, emphasizing the importance of embedding IDEA principles across organizations. Mental health in the workplace took center stage in a fireside chat led by WorkSafeNB’s Dr. Paul Atkinson, while Rocky Ozaki delivered two sessions including the transformative potential of AI and machine learning, and another on leading successful organizational change.

Lee Russell shared a powerful personal story through Threads of Life, underscoring the lasting impact of workplace tragedies. CEOs from across Canada discussed building resilient workplace cultures, and TELUS Health experts examined strategies for sustaining workers’ compensation systems amid shifting risks. Closing the summit, Morgan Hamel provided a timely and practical approach to managing social polarization in today’s complex work environment.

Delegates left the summit energized and equipped with new ideas to enhance their leadership roles and organizational impact. The 2025 AWCBC Governance Summit not only delivered on its promise of knowledge and networking but also celebrated the unique natural beauty of New Brunswick’s coast, making it a truly unforgettable experience.

Plans are already underway for the 2026 Governance Summit, which will be held in British Columbia, to continue fostering leadership excellence and enhancing collaboration across Canada’s workers' compensation community.
