Media Release: The Northwest Territories Power Corporation sentenced under the Safety Act

Yellowknife, NT (June 28, 2023) – On June 23, 2023, the Northwest Territories Power Corporation appeared in the Northwest Territories’ Territorial Court in Yellowknife and entered a guilty plea to an offence under the Safety Act.
NTPC pleaded guilty to a single count that it “did fail to maintain its establishment […] in such a manner that the health and safety of persons in the establishment […] was not likely to be endangered”, contrary to the Safety Act. They were issued a fine in the amount $200,000 to be paid to the Workers’ Protection Fund.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on March 5, 2021 at the Jackfish Power Plant. A buildup of ice near an overhead door at the power plant fell and struck a worker. The worker died as a result of their injuries.

On February 8, 2022, following an investigation, the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC) originally filed eleven charges against NTPC, in violation of the Safety Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. Pursuant to the plea agreement, the remaining ten charges were withdrawn.
