WorkplaceNL is reminding the public to take extra precautions when working indoors or outside over the next two days, as temperatures in many parts of the province are expected to reach up to 30 degrees Celsius, with Humidex values up to 36 degrees. These hot and humid conditions increase the risk of heat stress, especially for those who work in commercial kitchens, laundries, bakeries, construction and farming.
Early warning signs of heat stress may include headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, irritability, thirst and heavy sweating. If symptoms occur, move the person to a cool or shaded area to rest and provide water. If symptoms do not rapidly improve, seek medical attention.
To help reduce discomfort and the risk of heat stress:
- Use fans or air conditioning
- Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes
- Take more frequent rest breaks
- Stay hydrated before, during and after work
- Drink cool beverages, with no caffeine or alcohol (one cup of water every 30 minutes is recommended)
- Use sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat when working in the sun
- Minimize physically-demanding activities during peak temperature periods
- Create shade with screens or umbrellas
These safe work practices will significantly reduce the risk of heat stress.
