St. John’s, NL – WorkplaceNL is proud to recognize two outstanding students for their creativity and understanding of workplace safety in developing student safety video and radio ads.The winner of the 2024 video category is Bethany Reid of Corner Brook Regional High, Corner Brook. The video Good Visibility is no Accident showcases proper use of safe work practices and personal protective equipment in a high-risk setting. Bethany’s video has been submitted as Newfoundland and Labrador’s entry in the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety’s (CCOHS) national Focus on Safety Youth Video Contest.
The winner of the 2024 radio ad category is Samantha Meadus of Southwest Arm Academy, Little Heart’s Ease. The winning entry, The Safety Stand-up, will be aired on stations throughout the province.
“I offer my sincere congratulations to Bethany and Samantha on their outstanding achievements and commend your incredible submissions highlighting safe workplace practices,” said the Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister Responsible for WorkplaceNL. “It is vital for our young workers to actively participate in promoting education and awareness about workplace safety, and lead by example the way you have. Congratulations and keep up the great work!”
“Congratulations to Bethany and Samantha for their award-winning ads, and to all entrants for their amazing work showcasing the importance of workplace safety,” said Alicia Sutton, Vice President, Prevention and Workplace Services, WorkplaceNL. “It is inspiring to see young workers as role models as they instill safe work practices in their friends and co-workers.”
The annual Student Safety Video/Radio Ad Contest is open to youth in grades 7-12. It encourages students to share their thoughts on workplace safety and injury prevention. Winners receive a $1,000 cash prize and a plaque for their school.
Young workers, aged 15-24 years are typically at higher risk for injury on the job. WorkplaceNL continues to invest in programs that engage youth to become more aware of workplace safety and injury prevention, including the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) 3203 high school course available throughout the province and the free Online Young Worker OHS Course. Young people interested in advancing their safety knowledge are also encouraged to apply for the Youth Safety Training Bursary.
