WorkSafeNB seeks public’s input on regulatory review

WorkSafeNB is seeking stakeholder feedback to understand the economic and business impacts of proposed amendments to General Regulation 91-191 under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The proposed amendments were developed in collaboration with stakeholder technical committees and aim to enhance workplace safety, specifically pertaining to:

  • Logging and silviculture
  • Construction
  • Occupational hygiene
  • X-ray equipment
  • Materials containing asbestos
  • Mining

Richard Blais, WorkSafeNB’s interim Vice president of Prevention, said certain provisions of the Regulations are outdated and no longer align with other jurisdictions across Canada or modernized industry practices.

“We expect these regulatory amendments will improve workplace conditions and lead to strong safe work culture in New Brunswick, resulting in a decline in injuries.”

Due to the range of topics, the proposed changes will be implemented in three phases. The period to provide input for each phase has been extended to eight weeks from the standard four weeks. Phase 1 will not come into effect before April 1, 2022. Input for Phases 2 and 3 will be sought later in 2022.

“Stakeholder input is key to promoting an effective continuum of workplace safety,” Blais said. “Together, we can make New Brunswick the safest place to work.”

The review can be accessed at gnb.ca and will run until March 14, 2022.
