New President and CEO to Lead Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission

Iqaluit, NU (July 11, 2023) – Jenni Bruce, Chair of the Governance Council of the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC), is pleased to announce the appointment of Rick Hunt as the new President and Chief Executive Officer of the WSCC effective October 2nd , 2023.
“Rick brings decades of northern, safety, and management experience to the table,” says Bruce. “He values creating safe and respectful workplaces and recognizes the importance of developing collaborative relationships and delivering strong customer service. We’re so excited to welcome him to our team.”

Rick began his experience using his environmental degree and safety diplomas in the Alberta oil sands industry. He joined Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) in 2004 as a Safety/Environment Officer before progressing up the leadership ladder, where he currently holds the position of President and CEO. He holds several professional designations, including Canadian Certified Environmental Practitioner (CCEP), a Certified Health & Safety Consultant (CHSC), and a National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO).

This marks the first time that the President and CEO of the WSCC will be positioned in Nunavut. WSCC is the only compensation board in Canada that serves more than one province or territory.

“We’re committed to partnering with both the Northwest Territories and Nunavut governments to share in the leadership and work towards meeting our mission of promoting workplace health and safety while providing care for injured workers,” said Bruce.

Following the departure of Debbie Molloy in May, Harmeet Jagpal served as the Interim President.

“Harmeet’s leadership during this transition was invaluable,” said Bruce. “He kept the organization steady with his quiet confidence and his focus on collaborative work.”

As per the Workers’ Compensation Act, Section 101, the President is appointed by the Governance Council.
