On February 08, 2022, the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission filed eleven charges in the Northwest Territories’ Territorial Court under the Safety Act.
The Northwest Territories Power Corporation is charged with multiple counts alleging violations of the Safety Act and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, including failure to safely maintain the facility, failure to ensure the health and safety of all persons at the facility and failure to correct unsafe conditions at the plant, as well as other offences.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred on March 5, 2021 at the Jackfish Power Plant. A buildup of ice near an overhead door at the power plant fell and struck a worker. The worker died as a result of their injuries.
The first court appearance is scheduled for March 29, 2022, in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
As the matter is now before the courts, WSCC is not able to provide further information or comment at this time.
