Yellowknife, NT (February 2, 2024) – On January 19, 2024, the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission filed four charges against Diavik Diamond Mines in the Northwest Territories’ Territorial Court under the Mine Health and Safety Act.
Diavik Diamond Mine is charged with multiple counts alleging violations of the Mine Health and Safety Act, including failure to implement and maintain safe work practices, and failure to take every reasonable measure to protect the health and safety of their employees, as well as other offences.
The charges were filed following an investigation by WSCC Safety Officers in relation to an incident that occurred on January 26, 2023, at the Diavik Diamond Mine near Lac de Gras that resulted in a serious worker injury.
The first court appearance is scheduled for March 19, 2024, in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
As the matter is now before the courts, WSCC is not able to provide further information or comment at this time.

2. The Safety Act, section 11, outlines requirements for confidentiality relating to what personal information the WSCC can release. The Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act also states what personal information government bodies are permitted to release.
