WorkplaceNL announces 2022 winners of Safety Educator of the Year and Safe Student Awards

WorkplaceNL is pleased to announce the winners of the 2022 Health and Safety Educator of the Year and the Safe Student Awards.

This year’s Health and Safety Educator winner is Karen Woodland, a teacher at O’Donel High School in Mount. Pearl. The 2022 Safe Student Award winner is Madison Sullivan, a student at Holy Trinity High School in Torbay.

Ms. Woodland was selected for her support, commitment and dedication in building a culture of safety at her school and in her community. Ms. Woodland teaches OHS 3203 at O’Donel High School, is co-chair of the school’s OHS Committee and is responsible for the O’Donel First Responders Team. She promotes an attitude of safety and strives to foster the same attitude in her students as they prepare for their lives and careers beyond school.

Madison Sullivan received the Safe Student Award for her efforts to promote young worker health and safety at her school. By completing the OHS 3203 high school course, Madison has received Emergency First Aid Certification, OHS Committee Certification and WHMIS training. She has participated in workplace inspections at her school and work, and regularly shares examples of safe work practices and procedures with family, friends and co-workers. She also incorporates health and safety into all aspects of life and encourages others to do the same.

“Congratulations to Ms. Woodland and Madison on receiving their respective awards this year. It is wonderful to see the dedication from an educator’s perspective to instill a culture of safety in school and in the community, and the drive from a student to incorporate and promote health and safety for young workers,” said the Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister Responsible for Labour. “The dedication displayed demonstrates the engagement and passion both have for promoting education and instilling safe work practices.”

“On behalf of WorkplaceNL, I would like to congratulate Ms. Woodland and Madison for their contributions in creating a positive safety culture at their schools and in their communities,” said WorkplaceNL CEO Dennis Hogan. “Their dedication in promoting safe work practices is to be applauded and will help ensure that students and staff in their schools have a safe environment to learn and work.”

Ms. Woodland has received $500, a plaque and $500 worth of health and safety equipment and supplies for O’Donel High School. Madison Sullivan has been awarded a plaque and a $1,000 prize.

Young workers, aged 15-24 years, are typically at higher risk for injury on the job. WorkplaceNL continues to invest in programs to help youth become more aware of workplace safety and injury prevention, including the OHS 3203 high school course and the free Online Young Worker OHS Course. Young people interested in advancing their safety knowledge can also apply for the new Youth Safety Training Bursary Program.
