WorkplaceNL remembers workers who lost their lives, were injured or suffered illness on the National Day of Mourning

Every year on April 28, WorkplaceNL remembers those who lost their lives, were injured or experienced illness due to their work for the National Day of Mourning.

Last year in Newfoundland and Labrador, 18 people lost their lives due to their work – 3 from fatal incidents and 15 from occupational disease. In the past five years, 140 workers in Newfoundland and Labrador have lost their lives as result of workplace incidents or occupational disease.

“Today we remember those who were injured, suffered illness or have died due to their work,” said Bernard Davis, Minister Responsible for WorkplaceNL. “My thoughts are with all those who have been impacted by workplace injury, illness or death. As a province, we remain committed to ensuring our occupational health and safety programs and supports are continually evolving to meet the ever-changing needs of workplaces in order to protect workers and prevent further workplace tragedies.”

“The grief of losing a family member, friend or co-worker due to a work-related incident is immeasurable, said Dennis Hogan, CEO, WorkplaceNL. “Serious injuries and illness can have an equally devastating impact, and on the Day of Mourning, we reaffirm our commitment to helping prevent these workplace tragedies so that all workers can return home safely to their families each day.”

On April 28, we encourage workplaces and residents across the province to pause for a moment of silence to show your support and commitment to safe workplaces. You can also share a post on social media using the hashtag #DayofMourning.
